Report: Sabres offered Kennedy one-way contract

While some Sabres fans are still fuming about the actions of management during the Tim Kennedy arbitration saga, an interesting tidbit came out of Buffalo yesterday from beat reporter Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550.
Hamilton, a long time respected Buffalo media veteran, revealed that he knew from a source with the team that near the end of the arbitration process the Kennedy camp rejected a final offer from the Sabres of $800k on a one-way contract.
It had been speculated for weeks that Kennedy not being offered a one-way deal was the major obstacle between the two parties during negotiations.
The comment by Hamilton was made during one of his daily appearances on the station and following the announcement that the South Buffalo native had agreed to a one-year, $550k deal with the New York Rangers.
The Sabres open their home schedule against the Rangers at HSBC Arena on October 9.
For someone who wasn’t known for offering great quotes during his time in Buffalo, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Clark MacArthur certainly provided some interesting gems during yesterday’s FAN 590 radio interview.
On his leaving the Atlanta Thrashers and joining the Toronto Maple Leafs, MacArthur quipped: “I’m just glad to come to a real hockey town again.”
While he expressed positive views on the Sabres and Buffalo fans, he seemingly kept a stiff upper lip when discussing Atlanta as a hockey market. “Buffalo is a great city for its fan base, but Atlanta was different,” MacArthur said. “They’ve always got other things going on there… It will be fun playing in front of a sold out crowd [in Toronto] every night.”
The Buffalo Sabres blog on KK will be named “The Sabres Observer”. We wanted something with a simple old-school newspaper connotation and thus selected our own name - despite receiving dozens of good suggestions during our blog-naming contest. The contest prize winner will be selected in a random drawing to take place today.

I hazard to guess it’s their owner, Tom Golisano, Primis. Dude appears to be ham-fisted when it comes to the bottomline.

Primis- I will say this, Kennedy is not worth anywhere near $800k so for the Sabres to even offer him that much, they probably already knew they were over paying to keep him. In all seriousness, i’d say he’s worth something like $600-650k if you compare him to others around the league. It was tough seeing this all go down, but, us walking away from him was probably the best.
Dave- Nice name. When does the blog officially kick-off?

Official launch date not known yet. Likely in the next few weeks.
Primis raised some good questions. Here are the answers: http://bit.ly/dnypdq

This makes the Sabres look even *worse* IMHO. They offered him $800k one way and he ended up being awarded $1m. Really? They couldn’t pony up the extra $200k?
What a rinky-dink, poorly run, joke of an org Buffalo seems to be. The NHL really needs to do something about the Sabre and their ownership, because they’re running themselves like an AHL franchise, not an NHL one.
Everyone bashes Nashville and Florida and markets like that, but what the hell is Buffalo’s problem and why are they allowed to continue?
