via Sportsnet,
A Swedish source told Sportsnet the long awaited decision by Jonas Gustavsson is over as he’s decided to start his NHL career with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
An announcement is expected as early as today as “The Monster” signed off on a 1-year, $900,000 to start the 09-10 season backing up Vesa Toskola.

Really not a Leaf fan, but you can’t blame this guy for signing with a team where he’s likely to be heavily showcased - and insulated behind a much improved defence.
He’ll certainly get attention in TO that he wouldn’t get elsewhere.

For a price like that, I wonder why Detroit didn’t put its hand in the pot.

I hope this fails on a massive scale.

4 prospect goalies in one system? You’d be nuts even at that price.

My guess would be because Kenny, Hakkan, and company all expect he’s going to be a flop, just like Brunsstrom was a flop in Dallas last year.

But I mean, for that price, if he’s the next Bobby Lou, why not give it a shot?

He was a free agent - no doubt one of the major concerns he had was playing time, and he would get more in Toronto than in most other places. Besides, in some ways goalies are like quarterbacks - if you have multiple starters, you actually have no starters. He needs time to develop, like any prospect, and splitting time a couple ways gives a player enough time to get better, whereas splitting time four ways would not.
Toronto’s defense is much better than last year’s which will help him a lot.

primis- if you look back the wings were trying just as hard as dallas to get brunsstrom, lost out on him (fortunately), and then got leino as a consolation prize.
i am personally thinking the wings not going after him has a lot more to do with 3 prospects already in the system than them being able to see into the future to determine whether or not gustavsson is going to be any good.

last year, the wings made out like players for burnnstrem while actually hiding so to speak leino from the rest of the league.

I would combine that with the fact that, simply, they can’t afford to sign him. That, and they’ve commited to giving Jimmy Howard a chance and thus can’t seriously guarantee him more than a handful of starts in the NHL whereas, even without injuries, he would be able to play 20-30 games with the Leafs.
