Reviewing The NHL Network

from Neil Best at Newsday,
After six years on Canadian TV, the NHL Network launched in the United States, built around a nightly wrap-up show called “NHL On the Fly” with game highlights so extensive that even a Blue Jackets-Coyotes contest is treated as if, well, people actually care.
Which is the point, of course. The channel is for those who really, really care, and want to see stuff from highlights to features to live games to oldies such as yesterday’s Islanders-Oilers tilt from 1981.

I love the NHL Network. It is a great thing to have for rabid hockey fans to watch when they have nothing else to do. I don’t really feel that its purpose it to sell the nHL though, as the only people who will be watching are those who area already the league’s biggest fans. Those pretty decent league ads that are shown on the NHl need to be spread to network television where there are possible future-fans watching.

Here I go ranting about media again.
“The channel is so new in the United States that much of its ad inventory is unsold, leaving numerous spots for NHL-related programs and products. There also are endless promos for NHL.com, where a ticker for stats and scores usually appears.”
Mmmm. NHL-related programs and products as well as endless promos for NHL.com. Isn’t that what the channel is all about? Selling the NHL?
Word from US compatriots have praised the channel.
I really don’t think the NHL needs this.
