Richards Is The Next Wants To Play In New York Player

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
If I heard it once, I heard it a dozen times during this Entry Draft weekend in Minnesota: “[Brad] Richards told [X] he wants to come to New York.”
And this, too: “Slats [general manager Glen Sather] is going to blow his brains out to sign Richards.”
To which I respond: If Richards “wants to come to New York,” $32.5 million over five years—starting at $11 million this year to protect against a potential future rollback—should be enough money and enough of a commitment for him to achieve his dream.
And this: If Sather does indeed “blow his brains out to sign Richards,” to borrow from the vernacular, then the GM truly will have lost his mind.

Richard’s has hinted very strongly that he’d like to go somewhere competitive. That may rule out some teams with open wallets, but limited chances.

5 years $32.5m? That term is a discount for a player of Richards’ caliber. I think if he were to sign for that it would not be in NY. They are more than one player away from being a contender. They have a great goalie, decent young D and some decent forwards but they aren’t there yet.

Larry seems unaware that “I want to come to the Rangers.” means not this: “I want to come to the Rangers as long as they pay me what I want,” but actually just this: “I want to max out and don’t care where, as long as it’s not Edmonton, cause the wife won’t let me go there. The Rangers just happen to be the ones with open wallets, which is fine.”
