Rick Nash Contract Extension Talks Start Off On The Wrong Foot

After an early-evening meeting with his agent, Joe Resnick, Nash told The Dispatch last night that the initial offer from Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson yesterday fell short of what he had in mind.

“Things didn’t line up the way I anticipated them lining up,” Nash said. “I thought we had a solid chance of getting (a contract) done, especially with all the interest they said they had going into this.

“If this doesn’t happen in the next week, and we can’t hit a number where we’re both satisfied and we both feel it’s fair … if they want me that bad, they’ll get it done.”

Neither Howson nor Nash would reveal specifics in the contract, but sources indicated to The Dispatch that the offer had a five-year term.

Shut up, Rick, just shut up - you are going to give the Jackets fans a heart attack.  You’re just at the very beginning of the process, so don’t start talking trash yet.

He seems to be more circumspect than that usually - I wonder just how low the initial offer was.  I understand opening low in a negotiation, but not insanely so.

(Toronto fans ears just pricked up, I think.)

I disagree with you, for once, Baroque.

Insult him, BJs.  Lowball him and lowball him some more.  Make him mad.  Call his mother cheap.  Tell him she’s cheaper and tougher than he is.

The Wings will appreciate it next year.

I’m trying to think of what is best for Columbus! 

He should stay there and they should build the team around him.  If they don’t they are complete and utter morons.  On a galactically enormous scale, yet.

(But yes, if he were available, I’d love to have him.)

No, Baroque.  Suddenly, my ears pricked up and I’m getting visions of Filppula manning the second line with Franzen on one wing and Rick Friggin’ Nash on the other.

I’m drooling right now.
