Free-agent season opens tomorrow but if Canucks’ fans think their team can re-invent itself with a few crafty signings, they’re dreaming in technicolour. Of all the ways to improve an NHL lineup—trades, player development, drafting, etc.—free agency is by far the least efficient and the most dangerous. It can be a useful tool if a team is looking to fill one or two specific needs. Beyond that, you’re generally looking at players whose value has been artificially inflated.
