Rob Scuderi Check On Jason Chimera Tonight

Do Scuderi go too low to make the hit is my question?

No penalty on the play except for Derek Dorsett leavingt the bench and gettting a game misconduct along with Chimera who was yapping with the Kings bench.

added 10/26/09, 6:06am, from Aaron Portzline of Puck-rakers,

This wasn’t a hip check. Maybe it was intended to be, but it wasn’t even close. Scuderi essentially dived at Chimera’s knees, undercutting him and sending him airborn, skates over tin cup one might say.

Chimera’s face landed on the ice and he skidded that way a few feet before his neck crumpled and his body flopped the rest of the way over. It was a scary sight live, and even moreso in slow motion.

Too low.  Not intentionally too low, but too low.

my opinion:

ABSOLUTELY too low. no question. no debate. Scuderi put his knee down onto the ice and went through his knees… and damn right it was on purpose. probably didn’t foresee the guy hitting the ice like that, but that could have broken the guys neck. not a cool hit in my book.

A hip check gone wrong.  Scuderi committed too early and poorly-timed his hit, but I have no clue as to whether that was intentional.  He probably ducked out of the way to avoid getting bowled over himself, but I’d imagine that he’ll be at least fined to discourage that type of hit.  Definitely too low—Dominik Hasek has better timing—and the YouTube clip does a great job of capturing both teams’ and broadcasters’ reactions.

Chimera talks about the hit at LA Kings Insider-

“It was low. It was a dirty hit. I don’t care what you call it. I’ve been hip-checked before, but it’s a dirty hit. There’s no room in the game for that kind of (stuff). When the guy takes your knees out, what are you supposed to do? It wasn’t a hip check at all. It was a direct hit on the knees….

Poorly-timed, but probably not dirty.  This stuff happens.

It appeared to be poorly timed more than intentionally dirty, but it’s the definition of a low bridge hit.

If the league or PA wants this stuff to stop, you have ti fine/suspend even if it doesn’t appear to be intentional.  Otherwise, they set a precedent for when it is intentional.

This hit won’t define him as a cheap or dirty player, but if he keeps doing shit like this, you better believe that’s the rep he’s going to get.  Whether you want to call this one dirty or stupid is your prerogative; I just hope he never does it again.
