from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
Rick Curran, who represents Roberts—a veritable folk hero in his season-plus with the Penguins—said yesterday that Roberts will continue playing, but not in Pittsburgh.
“He very much enjoyed his time there,” Curran said. “But he understands that Ray [Shero, the Penguins’ general manager] has a number of items on his agenda that would take priority.”

We can’t recall any player in Penguins history or even Pittsburgh sports history quite like Gary Roberts. We don’t remember fans falling in love so deeply with a player in such a short period of time. Sure people adored Mario Lemieux or Sidney Crosby right off the bat but that was because they were proclaimed saviors of the franchise in one way or another.

That is the way Roberts is. He personifies grit, determination, and leadership. It Toronto, it was much the same way, and I hope if he is going somewhere else, the Blue & White look at him. It was a sad day when he left, and I would love to see him back.

Hmmmm. Could Gary Roberts be next season’s Dallas Drake in Detroit? I’ve got a feeling he’s just the kinda guy that Babs would love to have on his team.
He won the Cup with Calgary in 1988-1989. Maybe he’d like to go out hoisting another one 20 years later. The only question is: How much does he want?

His bertuzzi on Franzen notwhithstanding, I’ve always liked Roberts and think he probably earned every penny of his salary with the leadership he provided for the young Penguins. I’m not so sure that’s an easy thing to replace.
It’s unlikely Malkin will be bolting for Russia, but with Roberts and apparently Hossa on their way out, as well as Orpik and Malone remaining question marks, that team will have a somewhat different look next year.
