Just 5 million per?  Wow.  Devils got a steal in the current market.

They can have him for that kind of money.  $5 million for a 70-point scorer?  That’s insane.

5 million a year would be a steal for a two-way guy like Rolston… for no more than 2 years. He’ll be 40 when this contract ends? 5 Mil at 40… in the NHL… good god. But good for him, he did right by the only one who matters (and his agent). He’s not going to that bad a team either.

Way to let him go, Wild. And his replacement is Brunnette? Great. Another first round exit, here we come.

That’s the new NHL, brudda.  5 mil for a 70 pt scorer is absolutely a bargain right now. And don’t be surprised if Franzen is locked up for more than that.

Rolston admitted to waiting for an offer from Detroit, but they couldn’t offer him the money that he wanted, nor the length. The Wings are setting themselves up to offer Zetterberg, Franzen and Sameulsson bigger paydays after next season, and they can’t do that paying Rolston $4/$5 mil for 3 or 4 years.

Also, Rolston is well aware that Detroit is one of the few top candidates for Sundin’s services, and knew that if he waited around for Holland to make up his mind on Sundin, that his market value would fade and he’d end up signing with Detroit in the instance they don’t sign Sundin for far less than what he wants, or re-signing with Minnesota for far less than what he wants. He had to act fast, and actually got a pretty awesome deal. Look for New Jersey to make offers to Shanahan and Morrison as well, as it looks like a Newark Reunion is taking shape.
