Russians Stalling

from the CP via the Globe and Mail,
Maybe star centre Evgeni Malkin won’t play in the NHL next season after all, because Russia has yet to officially join the NHL-IIHF transfer agreement.
What looked like a done deal weeks ago is now stalling and it’s not clear whether Russia will officially sign the document.
“Right now, it’s issues that exist between the IIHF and the Russian Federation,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Monday from New York. “My understanding is that they are trying to schedule an in-person meeting in the near future. Our position is that while we think the transfer agreement is important and beneficial to the sport, if it doesn’t get done the players are going to come here anyway.”

Vladislav Tretiak’s trying to work a miracle, but the “old guard” who still run much of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation—and the presidents of the Superleague clubs (not the owners, they’re economic oligarchs)—are the same guys who’ve been in power since the 70’s and 80’s.
Tretiak and Fetisov have been fighting against a system of totalitarian sports management that’s been in power for about forty years now.
I’m sure that Vladislav’s doing everything in his power—especially given that the transfer agreement’s got a flat compensation fee for *any* prospect signed, regardless of where they were drafted or at what age they were signed—to get the agreement working…
But Russian politics and deadlines don’t go together, especially when the old guard wants one last kick at the “to hell with the IIHF, we want outright bribes!” can.

They’ve got to get it done. Without Malkin, there’s not much reason to think that this year’s Penguins could be much better than last years. Sure, we’ll have the Sidney Crosby show, which is guaranteed to be stellar, but I’d much rather he have a partner in scoring. Lord knows there’s not a lot of other proven scorers in the Pens lineup.
