Rumor: Patrick Marleau to Columbus

From David Pollack at the ‘Working the Corners’ blog,
The drumbeat isn’t quieting down when it comes to those Patrick Marleau trade rumors.
In fact, the pace is picking up.
So let me add this to the mix: An NHL source — not connected with either team — advises that the Sharks and Columbus are indeed close to a deal. San Jose would send Marleau and another player (unspecified) to the Blue Jackets for their first-round draft pick — 6th overall in the NHL entry draft later this month — and right wing Nikolai Zherdev.
read on for Pollack’s analysis of the rumor

That rumor was floating around at the deadline. We need a center…desperately.

Why would CBS give up a sometimes-dynamic young scoring winger for an overpaid, underproductive center that nobdy else seems to want?
Agree with John, this would be Milbury-esque in levels of stupidity.

Shhhhh, let Doug take another GM behind the shed.

Just trade Colorado 1st rounder (the one they got for Adam Foote) for Olli Jokinen. OJ clearly is trade bait for the Panthers, and Florida lack a 1st round pick.
I’d rather have Jokinen than Marleau anyway.

fredster - Who wouldn’t take Jokinen over Marleau? Jokinen IS that franchise, and IS their offense.

The only way I’d do that trade is if Campbell is the other player coming from SJ. But they’d better do it fast before he hits UFA.

If this happens, the Sharks had better pick up a Russian babysitter for Zherdev. His production fell off sharply after Fedorov was traded. If I’m not mistaken, both Semenov and Ozolinsh are UFA’s (not that either one would be a suitable mentor). I would expect a lot of pouting and poor play if Zherdev is the only Russian on the team.
The impetus to move Marleau now is because his two year extension with a no-trade kicks in July 1. Who can predict how he would respond now that Ron Wilson is gone? Yet another reason Doug Wilson should have fired RW last year.

Nabokov = Russian. That’s all you need right there…

Goalies are wack jobs. They can’t mentor anyone except other goalies.

Wow, that would be an unbelievably dumb deal by the BJ’s. Someone should be fired if that deal is made.
