Rumors From Ottawa

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

• A guy on the Leafs’ radar could be San Jose W Ryane Clowe. He has a cap hit of $3.625 million through next season, but the word is he might be someone the Sharks are willing to part with before the deadline.

Before anybody in San Jose picks up the phone to get GM Doug Wilson’s denial he’ll move Clowe, the belief is it would take more than the Leafs might be willing to offer to make that deal happen, so going after a potential unrestricted free agent is more realistic.

The Leafs would certainly have an interest in Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu. The Hurricanes have held talks with his camp, but it’s believed Ruutu wants too much on a long-term deal, which means he’ll likely be moved.

• Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini could be busy. Sure, we’ve all heard the Oilers are trying to deal W Ales Hemsky, but there’s also interest in Ds Theo Peckham and Andy Sutton. The veteran Sutton is a UFA at the end of the season, while Peckham could be valuable because he’s an RFA. There are a lot of teams looking for blue-line help.

• Keep an eye on Buffalo G Ryan Miller. He isn’t being shopped, but the Sabres will have to decide in the next two weeks if they’re in the playoff picture or not. The Ducks, Blackhawks and Lightning could all go looking for goaltending help. They would all have interest in Miller if GM Darcy Regier decides to make that move. Don’t rule out a Miller for Jonas Hiller swap. That should get the ball rolling.

I will call myself out if he gets traded, but this is utter insanity.  Garrioch is a total buffoon.  Clowe is almost the perfect combination of skill and grit; very few guys approach him in this niche.  Having a cold month is tough on fans, but luckily GMs are smarter.  The auction price would be incredibly high if he went to the block - as Garridiot noted, he’s on a great deal.  Even if he doesn’t fit in down the road, I am pretty sure the Teal considers itself a legit contender.

I think the only way the Sharks move Clowe is if they get an offer that knocks their socks off.

Burke does have his next two first rounders burning a hole in his pocket…

Why on earth would Anaheim make this move?  Hiller is much younger and has outplayed Miller each of the last 2 seasons.  He’s also been lights out the last couple of weeks whereas Miller still looks lost.  I could see Tampa going for Miller, but Anaheim’s not going to trade for Miller, they have a goalie.

How can Buffalo trade Miller for anything but another solid goaltender back?  They are going to go with Enroth?  That rules out TB right there.

They might, they are pretty high on Enroth and he’s played better than Miller this year.

Plus, it doesn’t necessarily have to be goalie for goalie.  They could easily trade with Tampa for a skater/picks/prospect, and then move the like of Boyes or Roy etc to a team like Vancouver for Schneider.
