If you’re in the market for a replica jersey, we highly suggest an Eric Staal #12. Otherwise, proceed at your own risk, because Carolina GM Jim Rutherford makes it sound like everyone else is fair game in trade speculation.

Caniacs may hate me for saying this, but maybe Carolina just isn’t that good.
They’ve had one very good regular season and two awesome playoff runs in the last several years—which is more than a lot of teams have done. But IMHO this is just as easy to attribute to chance, hot goaltending, catching lightning in a bottle, destiny, etc. rather than some inherent claim to excellence.
Rutherford says the team is underachieving. I posit that the team was overachieving in 05-06, and has pretty much played to their proper level otherwise. They’ve averaged a whopping 86 points over the past six seasons while playing in the worst division in the NHL. Toss out the 06 season and they’re a sub-500 team over that span. They’re always in the bottom half of the league defensively.
The Hurricanes had their time in the sun. It’s time to face reality and admit that it could be quite some time before it happens again.
