Ryan Smyth Taken Off The Ice

Jack Johnson of the Kings rode Ryan Smyth into the boards, and his head met the glass partition that starts at the end of the bench.

Smyth was out cold but did come to and he was talking while being strapped down to a body board.

In the lockeroom after the hit, Smyth was conscious and walking. He was being taken to hospital for tests.

Damm. That’s ugly to watch.

Looks like his helmetless head hitting the ice was the knock out blow.

I completely agree that some guys try to hit people into those spots and that those end pieces should have more padding. I flinch every time I see someone get hit near there, which happens a few times per game, as I always worry about a result like Smyth’s.

Worst hit of that game (not in terms how hurt the player was but how dirty) was Klemm’s. Frolov had been hit in the same place and Smyth earlier by Laperriere but the timing or force of it, I don’t know, didn’t amount to the impact felt by Smyth.

Moral of the story ... more padding needed on those end posts.

You know, if he’d had his helmet secured to his head.  They all complain about the concussions, but the wear the helmet like a loose touque.
