From Newsday,
The Islanders are putting the finishing touches on a deal for Edmonton captain Ryan Smyth. In exchange, the Oilers will receive former Islanders’ first-round draft picks Ryan O’Marra and Robert Nilsson plus the Islanders’ first-round pick this year.
more to come…
(note: as a KK reader mentions in the comments, Smyth was not the Oilers captain)
Update 3:34pm ET:
TSN confirms the same information on the air, also mentioning another team was involved but lost out.
Update 3:40pm ET:
Bob McKenzie TSN mentions the trade is pending final approval from the NHL. Call to NHL in progress now apparently.
Update 4:00pm ET:
TSN updates online,
Unable to reach a long-term deal with their heart-and-soul player, the Edmonton Oilers instead traded Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanders for prospects Ryan O’Marra and Robert Nilsson and the Islanders’ first-round pick in 2007.
Update 5:07pm ET:
Greg Logan at Newsday hashes out the Smyth deal for Islander’s fans,
If you thought some of the Islanders’ wins lately were exciting, general manager Garth Snow’s buzzer beater at the trade deadline topped everything. Snow couldn’t find a taker for his own future unrestricted free agent Jason Blake, but he had no problem paying the price Edmonton asked for 31-year-old forward Ryan Smyth.

How could the Rangers pass this up?

Isles better hope that signing Smyth is part of the deal. Otherwise look at bringing back Milbury.

Wow, this stinks. :( At least they got “Magic Man Jr.” Nilsson in the deal. If he’s as good as advertised this might be a good deal for the Oilers in about 2 years…

I’d agree with the Isles fans that a contract with Smyth should be a stipulation, since if somehow Smyth still re-signs with the Oilers in the offseason (like Weight) they got completely robbed.
Still, if the Oilers and Smyth couldn’t get a deal done today, I doubt anything could be done in the offseason, but who knows…

If Smyth goes back to Edmonton in July, this trade would be dubbed as franchise robbery. Snow has made snowmen out of his balls today.

... and one correction…. Jason Smith is the Oil Captain, not Ryan

Thanks for pointing that out CBS. Newsday probably got confused with the C.

Islanders could go further in the playoffs with Smyth aboard.
