Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanders

The Islanders are putting the finishing touches on a deal for Edmonton captain Ryan Smyth. In exchange, the Oilers will receive former Islanders’ first-round draft picks Ryan O’Marra and Robert Nilsson plus the Islanders’ first-round pick this year.

TSN confirms the same information on the air, also mentioning another team was involved but lost out.
Update 3:40pm ET:
Bob McKenzie TSN mentions the trade is pending final approval from the NHL. Call to NHL in progress now apparently.

Unable to reach a long-term deal with their heart-and-soul player, the Edmonton Oilers instead traded Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanders for prospects Ryan O’Marra and Robert Nilsson and the Islanders’ first-round pick in 2007.

If you thought some of the Islanders’ wins lately were exciting, general manager Garth Snow’s buzzer beater at the trade deadline topped everything. Snow couldn’t find a taker for his own future unrestricted free agent Jason Blake, but he had no problem paying the price Edmonton asked for 31-year-old forward Ryan Smyth.
