Ryan Whitney’s Return Date Unknown

The Edmonton Oilers had more than their fair share of injuries last season, and it seems for some that luck continued through the off-season.

Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney has re-tweaked his ankle in Boston earlier this month and according to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal is “sick of not playing.”

According to Matheson, Whitney hopes to be ready for the Oilers’ main camp in September but as many have seen ankles can be slow to heal injuries and do not always follow a structured schedule. Whitney’s season ending injury did require surgery, but even with surgery was slow to heal. Oilers’ fans were hoping for good news, and not getting anything conclusive all summer. Today, a story like this can be seen as the opposite, but it is possible that Whitney will be in shape and ready to play. On Oilers Nation earlier this week, Robin Brownlee took a look at the Whitney injury and is nervous about Whitney’s return date to the team. I can’t help but side with Brownlee on this one.

If we want to look on the bride side, or try to find a bright side, this may get Oilers’ prospects Taylor Chorney or Jeff Petry in NHL games with some veteran NHL defensemen sooner than may have been expected this year. Of course Oilers’ fans would prefer to see Ryan Whitney suited up to start this season, rather than the pressbox.

In any case, although it is not good news, we now have a better understanding of where Whitney’s recovery is at.
