Sakic Announcement

via the Colorado Avalanche, Joe Sakic will make a special announcement regarding his hockey career at 3:00pm ET on Thursday, July 9th.

Numereous speculation traveling around the web right now, but I personally feel Joe deserves and has earned the right to speak for himself.  Therefore, I will not be posting any updates on this unless Sakic himself speaks on this subject.

I have reason to believe that he is announcing his homosexuality at news conference.

Hey hey Poopypoo from edmonton,

Not all of us despised Sakic.  Lemieux, Forsberg, Deadmarsh, Keane, Jones, they can all take a short trip to hell.  But Sakic is the ONLY member of that team I had any respect for.  He’s a great leader and accomplished a lot in his career.  He’s synonymous with the Avs franchise and I’m sure he will be revered just as much as Yzerman is w/ Wings fans.

Wingsfan23, we are speaking about one of the classiest, most humble men in all of sports.  Show some respect.  I don’t even think the infamous 19 on this site would approve of speaking like that about Joe Sakic.

I fear he may be announcing his retirement.  I don’t think he’s ever set a special date and time to announce he’s returning for another season.  He will be missed on the ice and I was hoping that he could play alongside the Avs’ new kids and teach them what it means to be a pro in the NHL.  Also, I was hoping to see him play in one last Olympics near his home town in B.C..

Oh well.  All good things must come to an end I guess.  One thing is for certain though.  First ballot unanimous vote to The Hall his first year of eligibility.

I never liked Joe Sakic.  In fact, I always thought he looked a bit too much like a mouse for me to be entirely comfortable with him.  I can’t really explain the basis for this theory, but I’m pretty sure if you left him alone in your house he’d eat all of your cheese, make a mess of your crackers, and then beat you with the scariest freaking wrist shot in the NHL no matter that you knew it was coming.  Man, I hated seeing this guy with the puck.

He was a great, great player and the Dive are a much, much more detestable team without him.  I just wish his career had ended in less of a fizzle, surrounded by mediocrity, and with something that befit it’s greatness.

I compare Sakic to Peter Sykora of last years Pens. He was an average player who did nothing in the playoffs, but still gets his name on the cup. There is no way Sakic makes it to the HoF.

how fitting on his b-day he retires. Joe Sakic was one of the great leaders in the game. sad to see him not go out on top. he’s first ballot HOFer

Best of luck to (the other) #19. Sakic has been a great player and a class act ... the one Avs player that Wings fans always respected and admired. Anyone who says a negative word against him is, obviously, a total asswipe.

wingsfan23 & another name being used in the comments of this post-

I don’t have time to babysit your comments.  Yes, you are using two names here and have been caught..

Stick with one name or you won’t be able to comment again.

Not in the HOF? WOW - this guy is surely trying to get some attention, which he has succeeded in doing I guess.

Sakic will be in the HOF as soon as he is eligible and not a second later

Pathetic.  And since this idiot is commenting anonymously is testament to what a scumbag he is.

As for “No Ordinary Joe,” I agree, Paul.  He has earned my respects and admirations.  I’ve always would’ve liked to see him in a Wings sweater.

Only guy on the Avs I ever thought had any class. He played the game like it was supposed to be played. Had a wicked wrist shot as well. The Avs as well as Team Canada are going to miss him.

If Joe says he is retiring Philip, then he is.

Until then, will just wait and let Sakic talk.

Ok, but if he is, it’s a shame that he’s ending his career after an injury-plagued season. I would like to see him try and give it one more year, play a full season, and retire on his own terms. Good luck in the future Joe.

Philip - I think that’s what he tried to do this past season after being injured a lot the year before.

The line from here is that he is going to retire.

This makes me sad.  I have enjoyed watching him play over the years and he was the class act of the Avalanche.  He has done so much for the community that you will never hear about because he never wanted the publicity.

He deserves a better send off than what last year was.

wingsfan23 sounds like a bitter pens “fan” continuing his celebration by attempting to sully all Wings fans.

Average ‘bag.

Sakic was and is(?) one of the only palatable Nords, and I have a ton of respect for the guy. Skilled, classy - just saddled for playing with a joke organization. Would have loved seeing him take #91 after Fedorov left.

Good luck, Joe.

Paul does this classy thing for Sakic, by letting him announce HIS own retirement and not list any post about said retirement. Then the idiotic comments (Redwing23) start. These people(Redwing23) have no serious interest in hockey. I think they (Redwing23) just surf the net and post outragous comments. Again, classy move Paul, great job.

I’d hate to see him leave like this- after being sidelined by a freak accident on a terrible team.  At the same time, he’s got nothing to prove on a rebuilding team and I can’t see him playing anywhere else.

If Sakic is announcing his retirement, he will be missed.  Despite the Wings history with Colorado, there has never been any doubt that he is a respectable and formidable player.  He was Colorado’s Steve Yzerman.  It will be sad to see him go.

Without a doubt Joe Sakic is one of the best Canadian hockey player to ever play. I will assume wingsfan23 has a head injury, (along with 95% of all other wings fans)

Paul, this is why this is the best site on the net. You let anyone( from the Red Wing’s fans to thier much rivaled Penguin’s Fans) post a comment at anytime with no membership or any kind of sign-up needed. Yet you hold EVERYONE to descent standards. Again Paul, great job!
