San Jose Fans Boo Anthem

via the CP,

San Jose Sharks fans were in a nasty mood Sunday night, loudly booing the Canadian national anthem before the start of Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinal.
The Sharks are playing the Edmonton Oilers.
Annemarie Martin had barely began singing O Canada when many in the sellout crowd of 17,496 began booing. The sound was so loud it nearly drowned out Martin.
As the song progressed the booing decreased and some Shark fans joined in singing the Canadian national anthem.
There was no apparent motive for the booing - just a questionable expression of the fans’ dislike of the Oilers, who won the last two games in Edmonton to tie the best-of-seven series 2-2.

I really hope someone from the Oilers organization gets on the PA before the national anthem during Game 6 to tell the fans not to boo, or else it could get ugly.

I think the reason they did it is two-fold:
1. They thought it would express their hate of the Oilers
2. A little payback for all those times USA teams (jr. nats, etc.) went to Canada and got the crap booed out of them and their anthem.

The first reason was a little misguided, since a majority of the SJ players are Canadian. If it had been a song about Edmonton or the Oilers - boo the crap out of it - but not the national anthem of a nation.

The second reason, while still wrong, is a little more understandable. I have to admit that I get ticked when it happens to American teams up there and maybe that explains it. But I wouldn’t have booed out of respect.

Anyway, the Sharks are in real trouble, and looks like we’re heading for an EDM/ANA WC Final. I bet TV executives at OLN are not smiling today.

That was bizarre. I was confused by that display by the San Jose fans. I am sure Marleau, Thornton and Hannan were wondering the same thing. I think Edmonton Anaheim series will be fun to watch although most people in America were looking forward to a All California Conference Finals.
