NEW YORK (May 7, 2008)—To venerate its past, to celebrate its present and to anticipate its future, the National Hockey League has scheduled four major events in conjunction with the 2008 Stanley Cup Final:
* The League will honor members of the Detroit Red Wings dynasty that won four Stanley Cups in a six-year stretch from 1950 to 1955. Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Red Kelly, Alex Delvecchio, Marty Pavelich, Johnny Wilson and Marcel Pronovost have been invited to attend a dinner on an off-day during the first week of the Stanley Cup Final.
* The League will also conduct a special Awards presentation to the winners of a number of regular-season awards. The Art Ross Trophy and Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy will be presented to Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who led the NHL with 65 goals and 112 points. The William M. Jennings Trophy, which goes to the goaltenders who played in at least 25 games on the team that allowed the fewest goals, will be presented to Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek of the Detroit Red Wings, who paced the team to a League-low 179 goals-against. The Mark Messier Leadership Award will also be presented to the player who exemplifies leadership qualities both on and off the ice.
* Six of the Top Prospects for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft (June 20-21 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa) will attend a media luncheon: C Steven Stamkos of the Sarnia Sting, the top-ranked North American skater according to the final Central Scouting Bureau listings; and five defensemen - ranked #2 through #6 by Central Scouting in the final rankings: Zach Bogosian of the Peterborough Petes (Ontario Hockey League); Drew Doughty of the Guelph Storm; Tyler Myers and Luke Schenn of the Kelowna Rockets (Western Hockey League) and Alex Pietrangelo of the Niagara Ice Dogs (OHL). The Tampa Bay Lightning hold the first overall selection and are followed in the top five by the Los Angeles Kings, Atlanta Thrashers, St. Louis Blues and New York Islanders.
* The NHL’s General Managers are also scheduled to meet during the Final.
