Scott Niedermayer Stands Up For Duck Abuse

via the AP,

Scott Niedermayer doesn’t take kindly to duck abuse.
That’s why the defenseman for Stanley Cup champion Anaheim signed on with PETA to defend ducks—mighty or otherwise.
Niedermayer sent a letter to the 50 members of the Chicago City Council, urging them to fight against efforts to repeal the city’s ban on foie gras—the delicacy from enlarged livers of force-fed ducks and geese.
“As an Anaheim Duck, I hate to see real ducks tortured so that a handful of wealthy chefs can serve their diseased organs,” wrote Niedermayer, the playoffs MVP last season. “Please uphold this compassionate law.”
His letter said foie gras production is outlawed in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Czech Republic, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, and Israel. In 2012, it will become illegal to sell foie gras in California.

I hate this kind of thing. People know so very little about foie gras. They are acutally a lot nicer to the ducks then most other farmed animals like cattle. They are force fed, but its done delecately and ducks don’t have a gag reflex so to them its just like preparing for winter when they naturally gorge on food anyway. Anyways I won’t waste more time on this board on the subject, but i have lost some respect for mr. Niederymayer.

Kudos to Mr. Niedermayer. Very happy with that. Anything we can do to curb animal cruelty is a good thing (within reason).

There is no reason to eat duck.

I’d hate to see what they’re doing to the cattle then:

(not really nsfw, but some rather unpleasant images, so wait until you’re home if there’s any doubt).

What you see here is nothing like most foie gras farms. This is a select few places that do this, and all the farms I have been to in california they are kept in outdoor cages with about 5-10 ducks per cage they are reasonable sized cages as well and they are well cared for. The thing with any farmed meat is there is always going to be somebody going about it a cruel way because they don’t respect the animals, but not all are like that. In fact most aren’t. I do believe ones like that should be shut down, but not banning foie gras. Thats like banning meat eating because you have to kill the animal its sorta obvious really.

Man I hate PETA. I never liked Niedermayer either, but I’ve lost a lot of respect for him for supporting those insane radicals. We all know what PETA really stands for anyways: People for the Eating of Tasty Animals. I’m gonna go practice archery for the upcoming deer season.

Go Wings.

derek - people who support PETA or belong to PETA are not all “insane radicals” as you foolishly claim. All kinds of people support PETA - Niedermayer, Pamela Anderson, Jessica Simpson, actors Joaquin Phoenix and Mike Farrell, and millions of other people who are not “insane radicals”. And, your calling them “insane radicals” and making the comments you made is as absurd and uninformed as someone saying everyone who hunts is an uneducated inbred neanderthal who has issues with their own manhood.
