NEW YORK – New York Rangers left wing Sean Avery has teamed up with the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – in a new video for its “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign. In the video, Avery explains, “I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated, and that applies to marriage.” The campaign, which raises the public profile of marriage equality in New York, can be viewed online at http://www.hrc.org/NY4marriage.
“Sean Avery knows what it means to be a leader - on and off the ice,” said HRC Senior New York Strategist Brian Ellner. “As the first professional athlete in the state to publically support marriage equality, his voice is sure to resonate. Like a majority of New Yorkers, he believes in the freedom of all loving, committed couples to marry.”
A recent poll released by the Siena Research Institute shows public opinion continues to trend toward marriage equality in New York State with a record high of 58 percent support and a record low of 36 percent opposition.
Sean Avery is currently in his fifth season with the New York Rangers and helped take the team to the 2011 playoffs.
The New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign is centered on video testimonials from New Yorkers who support the right of same-sex couples to marry. To date, HRC has released videos from Sean Avery, Julianna Margulies, Bill T. Jones, Sam Waterston, Christopher Meloni, Mario Batali, David Chang, Tom Colicchio, Lucy Liu, Bill Bratton and Rikki Klieman, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Former New York City Mayors Ed Koch and David Dinkins, Russell Simmons, Mark and Sunrise Ruffalo, John Slattery, Joan Rivers, Barbara Bush, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Fran Drescher, Moby, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Julianne Moore and Kenneth Cole – with more to follow in the coming weeks.
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

I love to cheer against him on the ice, but I’m glad every time I see a hockey player or a hockey fan stand up for equality and civil rights.

The implication in this video is that (doing onto others as you would like them to do to you) means (letting them define marriage any way they want). That’s a huge leap of logic.
On a more humorous note, though, it’s interesting to see Avery, of all people, being chosen as a spokesperson for HRC to say, “I treat everyone the way I expect to be treated.”

Not really. “If I want people to honor and respect my committed relationship I should be prepared to honor and respect their committed relationship.” Fairly basic actually.

lmao, from the guy who was talking about sloppy seconds, and probably one of the most classless guys in the sport. Is it me or did it look like he was trying hard not to laugh while talking about marriage equality?

Avery is a douchebag (usually on and off the ice), but kudos to him on this one.

The NHL’s biggest clown as a spokesperson? Really?
And get some new glasses. Lord knows you can afford something that doesn’t look like it was dispensed by the US Army in the 60s.
