Secure Goaltending

from Mike Brophy of Sportsnet,

Outside of Boston (Thomas), San Jose (Evgeni Nabokov), Carolina (Cam Ward) and Vancouver (Roberto Luongo) among teams that are certain to be in the playoffs, which teams feel secure about their goaltending?

The defending champion Detroit Red Wings? I happen to think Chris Osgood is a very competent goaltender, but based on his play this season, which has been decidedly inconsistent, he’ll need to make huge strides if the Red Wings are to win back-to-back Cups. Osgood insists he’ll be fine when the playoffs start, but I’ll believe it when I see it. His backup, Ty Conklin, has blown numerous opportunities to steal the No. 1 job away from him.

The Washington Capitals are hoping this is the season they take a huge step in the playoffs and with the probable MVP in Alexander Ovechkin and best defenceman in Mike Green, you’d have to think it is a distinct possibility.

But can they do it with Jose Theodore in net?

You can’t honestly tell me San Jose is confident with Nabokov in a series against Detroit. He’s been awful against the Wings this year. Pavel Datsyuk is clearly in his head.

Sharks fans are on Nabby as bad as Wings fans are on Oz.

The past 3 games, Luongo’s played poorly. He has to pick it up quickly or he’ll be a complete non-factor in the playoffs.

And why isn’t Khabibulin mentioned?  Sure, the Hawks still have Huet, but Khabibulin’s their goalie going into the playoffs and you should be confident with that.

Just because Babcock/Holland kept waffling on the starting job and giving Osgood 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances doesn’t mean that Conklin has “blown” his chances.

If almost any other team in the league had this situation going on, they would have made Conklin the starter.

Jeez, how many teams in the league have got multi-million dollar goalies or goalies who have been said to have their team’s future in their hand riding the pine right now?
