Selanne Signs For Two Years

from Dan Wood at Ducks Blog,
Right wing Teemu Selanne is scheduled to be in the Ducks’ lineup for Sunday’s 5 p.m. exhibition game against the Vancouver Canucks at Honda Center after signing a two-year, $5.25 million contract earlier in the day.
Two years? Perhaps next summer, unlike the past two, we won’t have to endure persistent and ridiculous Internet rumors that Selanne is headed to play in Montreal, Dallas, Sweden, Russia, Timbuktu or wherever else....
The signing of Selanne once again pushes the Ducks above the NHL’s $56.7 million salary ceiling for this season, by about $1.225 million…
The Ducks’ current salary-cap projection includes having rookie winger Bobby Ryan on the NHL roster, which isn’t a given, but appears more likely than not. Were the Ducks to assign Ryan to their American League affiliate, the Iowa Chops, the Ducks would slide more than $500,000 beneath the cap with that move alone.
added 7:03pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
The pertinent numbers: Selanne will earn $3.25 million in the first year of the deal and $2 million in the second. It’s a total package of $5.25 million, with no performance bonuses, so the annual salary-cap charge is $2.625 million – reasonable by today’s standards for a player of Selanne’s caliber, who will play in the Ducks’ top six.
Presumably, the Ducks are convinced of his commitment too, because if Selanne decides not to play next year, they take a salary-cap hit anyway (a function of his being over the age of 35).

I’m at a complete loss for words with the way Burke makes these signings.
Unbelievable....

HOW DARE YOU SIGN A 40 GOAL PLAYER FOR 2.6 MILLION YOU RETARD.
Let’s not forget that jeff carter is making 5 million. It’s an absolute bargain, anyone who says or claims otherwise is deluding themselves in order to bash burke and the ducks at all costs.

It is an excellent price for Selanne - the problem is that Anaheim’s salary cap situation is so messed up that now they are over again and have to get rid of someone else.
It isn’t Selanne’s fault, and signing him isn’t dumb - it’s the overall cap management that looks dumb.
He’s been working out with the team while they made cap space, so it isn’t like his semi-retirement earlier - and he never struck me as being as flakey as Niedermayer, so it’s a two-year deal for a more reliable player. If the overall cap situation wasn’t so tight it would make even more sense.
I wonder who gets to walk the plank off the Duck boat next.

That’s exactly right, Baroque.
Nothing against Selanne. It’s the way Burke attempts to solve his cap dilemma that has the NHL wondering, “WTF is he doing when he is $1.225 million over the cap yet again?”

Selanne wants to play in the Olympics in 2010. So he will, and has stated, that he will play next season. The 2 year deal was his idea, you fools. So quick to jump all over something you know nothing about.

Congratulations. You just signed a one dimensional power play specialist, who is approaching 40, not 35, and who’s sole motivation is not winning the cup with your team, but getting in shape for the 2010 Olympics. How about Teemu help the Ducks by taking less, he doesn’t live under a rock, he knows the cap situation, and if he gave two farts about the ducks and winning another Stanley cup he would put himself and his team in the best situation possible by allowing the ducks to keep more players and be a deeper team.

Wow that is ridiculous. Where are all the dumb poultry fans now saying “Selanne is willing to sign for next to nothing.”
Not only did he sign for a good bit of money, but he signed for enough money that he pushed them back over the cap. So now they are going to have to get rid of ANOTHER player for an aging star who will probably retire after this season and leave the Ducks with his cap hit for another season.
