from the CP via TSN,
Ex-NHL hockey coach Jacques Demers, who has spoken frankly about his lifelong battle with illiteracy, is about to be named to the Senate, his employer said Thursday.
Now a hockey analyst, Demers’s current employer—television network RDS—announced the appointment on its web site.
It says he will be named to the Senate by Prime Minister Stephen Harper during his swing Thursday through Quebec City.

Voox,
I’d suggest that, to understand legislative documents, one might need reading comprehension greater than high school level (especially considering how educational standards have plummeted in recent years). Of course, he clearly has people to explain things to him (I mean, he “wrote” both a column and a book, right?).
While he’s probably not even close to being the worst candidate for appointment in the history of the Senate, is there really no one out there better suited to the position?

Demers is a sharp fellow, but the illiteracy thing is a bit tough for me to accept when giving his such a position. The duty of the senate in Canada is to check all laws passed by the House of Commons, and vote down the bad bills.
That being said, they’ve never voted down a bad bill/law before. While some feel the position is archaic, I believe it does provide a necessary check and balance on the House of Commons.
Will Demers have someone dictate to him the bills he is voting on? I am sure that most politicians don’t fully read the majority of what they vote on, but I hope that they COULD if they wanted to.
Not to belittle Mr. Demers, but I want the best and brightest in government. This is a lofty and largely underachieved goal, but putting in someone who is illiterate is definitely not ideal. If Demers has a high-school equivalent level of reading comprehension, then I have absolutely no issue with Mr. Demers in our Senate.
