from Ian Mendes at Sportsnet,
Your Senators are sitting in first place and have not lost a single meaningful game this season. Who cares about Saturday’s loss to the Maple Leafs? That rivalry now has as much intensity a mid-November meeting between Columbus and Carolina.
Four losses in four games to the Capitals? If it happened in April, I’d be really concerned. But when it happens in January, you have to admit it’s slightly humorous from a media person’s perspective.
Losses to these inferior teams are the sign that Stanley Cup hangover has officially hit the Ottawa Senators.

I was under the impression that you had to drink from the Stanley Cup in order to get a Stanley Cup hangover.

A few quibbles:
The Senators didn’t win the Stanley Cup - and the hangover usually hits at the beginning of the season as the team gets off to a slow start.
Yes, they beat the Red Wings - once, in the second game of a back-to-back, if I recall correctly. That is an entirely different animal from winning four of seven games, at least a couple of them on the road, when neither team has a travel advantage during the series.
Once a team starts sliding it can be very hard to get back on track. Streaks appear to have a self-fulfilling element to them, especially losing streaks.
The number eight seed in the Eastern conference may be one of those teams currently out of the playoffs, and the Senators would be in a better position to win if they can get up for even non-playoff teams, because they will have to cross those first.
Besides, if they continue losing they might have a tough time hanging on to home ice.
The odder thing is the way they have been losing - it hasn’t looked like a lack of talent, but just a general mental fuzziness. Without Heatley and Alfredsson, they have been sloppy and inattentive, especially defensively. If only two players out can make that much of a difference in their effort, I think it is cause for concern.
(Especially if they lose to the Canadiens, which is even more likely if they take a series of penalties against that power-play.)
