Sharks GM Apologizes To Fans And Owners

from David Pollak of Working the Corners at the Mercury News,

“I apologize to our fans and I apologize to our owners because they deserve better,” Wilson said.  “And believe me, I take full responsibility. You bring in people and you bring in situations and if there’s any enabling or entitlement that comes from that, then that belongs right here and nowhere else.”

Wilson noted that he usually waits a week to calm down after a playoff exit, “but you don’t deserve me having a week.”

Wilson, who said this was by far the most painful playoff exit yet, said at various times that fans “should be pissed off” and “should feel cheated.” That last point prompted someone to ask him if he felt cheated, too.

“I don’t feel cheated. I feel responsible. I’m part of it. If I’m part of the problem, then I better be working to find us solutions here.”

Uh...no.  No no no no NO.  I absolutely ABHOR the idea of Kenny Holland apologizing for a bad playoff year.  I’d want him to STFU and get back to work making the Wings a better team.  If he says shit like that, then I’m kicking his ass.

I hate, hate, HATE the use of the word “deserve.” Sharks fans, players and owners don’t deserve anything. Fact it, they had a nice season, but when it came down to it, they were clearly not the same team in the playoffs. The better team actually won that series. A more appropriate phrase would be “We deserved what we got.”

And I’m with ya SYF. If Kenny apologizes for a bad playoff run, I’m gonna get arrested by Homeland or the FBI as his ass is getting hunted down.

I wasn’t thinking along your lines but, yes, this whole monologue fails. But it fails at trying to do something noble, a leader taking responsibility for his team. Maybe he’s trying to demonstrate what that would look like to his team.

Never should have traded for Joe Thornton if he wanted to win playoff games...I got to believe he knew this when the deal went down. Wilson isn’t stupid. They just wanted to be a good team that makes the playoffs. That’s good enough for San Jose and that’s all they deserve as far as I’m concerned

Seconded.  The fans deserve a good effort, but no one deserves for their team to win.  Some wins are nicer stories than others, but sports doesn’t play out according to what is the best plotline.  It’s called reality, and sometimes it stinks.

I wonder if the team wasn’t putting in a solid effort, or if it just looked that way because they were so nervous about their past history?  I guess only they themselves know for sure.
