Sharks May Try To Move Up In The Draft

from Al Strachan at Fox Sports,

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has said that he intends to try to give himself a boost up the draft ladder to get a selection in the top three.

San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson has said no such thing. But the whispers around the league say that Wilson has a better chance of getting one of those top picks than Burke does.

For one thing, Wilson has more to offer. After a disappointing playoff, almost everyone on the team is available. Furthermore, Wilson has done an in-depth analysis and realizes that he has to change the core of his team. That means he’ll move out an elite veteran to get an elite youngster.

Doubtful that Doug Wilson could outdo anything that Burke wants. Wilson’s draft history is horrible, he reaches for players that aren’t very good, or he trades his picks away for nothing. The Sharks off-season plan is to go cheaper.

Expect the Sharks to trade away players such as Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo, with players like Christian Erhroff also possible. Expect the Sharks to get a first round pick and draft a player way too high, or reach on some unknown.

Then when Free Agency starts expect the Sharks to announce the re-signing of Rob Blake and Ryane Clowe, but don’t expect much else the Sharks don’t use free agency, and want to go the cheaper route.

When it invovles Doug Wilson and the Sharks this year, don’t expect much in the way of off-season improvement.
