SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the team has signed center Manny Malhotra. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Malhotra, 29, recently finished his 12th NHL season, posting a career-high 35 points (11 goals, 24 assists) and as a plus-nine with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He also finished fourth in the NHL in faceoff percentage among those who took at least 700 face-offs) at 58.0%. He took 1380 face-offs last season, 13th most in the NHL.

That’s not entirely correct. The deferred bonus from one year to the next is the amount earned, not necessarily the maximum bonus amount. So in the case of San Jose it depends on the bonuses used and the performance of the players (and San Jose can “sabotage” the likelihood of players making some bonuses by playing them less for example).
The other point is that their starting roster is unknown. They could start with 20 players to reduce the season cap hit, and create room for inclusion of players later in the season.
Compared to the mess a month ago, San Jose has done rather well in restructuring. Whether they’ll be better or worse is still an open question, of course.

Well, there you go, Moq. Neither of those options will hurt them at all. So I guess they’ll be just fine with that signing.

Manny signed for $700k. So that means the Sharks have to post $1,240,000 in bonus money from this year against next year’s cap. With a boatload of RFAs and UFAs coming up in 2010, good luck with that extra baggage, Dougie.
