Sharks Without A Captain At This Point

from David Pollak of Working the Corners at the Mercury News,

“Who will be our captain? Who will be our assistants? At this point I can’t give you that answer?

You can’t or you won’t?

“I won’t and I can’t,” McLellan said. “I want to see who’s stepping up to the front. When training camp starts on Sept. 12, you may walk into my office and say who’s your captain and I’ll probably tell you I’ll let you know when we know.

“At this point, nobody’s our captain,” he said. “We don’t have assistant captains. The discussion is ongoing and when we determine that, then we’ll make those announcements.”

McLellan would not totally rule out the possibility of the C ending up back with Marleau — but it has been made pretty clear for weeks now that the front office and/or coaching staff wanted a change.

Yes, I’m sure changing who has the ‘C’ will make all the difference with the Sharks.

When did almost everyone suddenly go completely ignorant about what the A stands for? It’s ALTERNATE, not ASSISTANT, people! Jeez…

It’s ALTERNATE, not ASSISTANT

Dakkster, you’re exactly right, that’s one of my pet peeves.
It has become almost common practice to say “assistant captain ”  nowadays. I’ll always say “alternate captain ” when speaking even though I never do correct people who use assistant instead of alternate. It’s probably because I’ll be constantly correcting them and sounding like an ass. But maybe I should?

Also, it’s a little early to be worring about Captains & Alternates at this point in the season.
The sharks have bigger problems to worry about , like playoff stamina.

As long as Doug Wilson is captain of this lost ship, this organization will go nowhere. He has no direction, needs to take advise from a fellow teams guru and has no plan to succeed. First Wilson tells us changes will be made, then he makes no changes, then when questioned he says that “Some miracle will occur and we will make a big trade” (not for Heatley). And all will be well when the playoffs start.

Okay anyone want to predict the future for the Sharks. Regular season begins and the Sharks have basically the same core group as last year, but Wilson exciles Cheechoo to the minors to save on the salary cap. We go through the season and are struggling as a 7 or 8 seed. So Doug Wilson will trade away all the Sharks 2010 draft picks at the deadline for a rental player who will make no difference, and who will not resign with the Sharks in the off-season. After being eliminated early in the playoffs once again, Wilson will promise fans that big changes will occur and tough decisions will be made. When Free Agency begins the Sharks pass and instead use the Start of free agency to resign some of their own UFA, but basically remain inactive during free agency. And then we just repeat what we have done for the last 4 off-seasons under Wilson’s command. Changes, tough decisions? What changes? What tough decisions? When it time to make tough decisions Wilson asks other organizations what to do? When it comes to making Changes Wilson believes you make major changes by getting rid of non-impact players such as Marcel Goc.

I think at this point the battle for “alternate” instead of “assistant” is lost.  Alternate makes it sound as though the player with an A is only around when the C isn’t, like a substitute, and assistant makes it sound more like they are on the ice at the same time (which they often are).

I think you guys are tilting at windmills regarding that particular word usage (gone the same way as calling a sweater a jersey now).  smile

Don’t even get me started on arbiter vs the infinitely more clunky arbitrator…

I believe that is why they gave out the “A” in the first place. For someone to represent the team if the Captain wasn’t on the ice at that particular time, an alternate so to speak

I think at this point the battle for “alternate” instead of “assistant” is lost.

Baroque, agreed I also do believe the battle is lost.

You really have only 2 candidates…Marleau and Setoguchi.  But seriously…why do the sharks blame their teams fortune on Marleau and Thorton?  Maybe if they had LINE DEPTH their playoff performance would be a bit better.

I don’t recall anyone ever saying “assistant” captain.  It’s alternate…for when the team’s captain is hurt, in the penalty box, or injured.  Well…as far as I know.

Sharks GM Doug Wilson today told the San Jose Mercury news that he is consulting with Scotty Bowman who currently is working in the Blackhawks organization. He is going to ask Scotty his thoughts on who the Sharks next captain should be, and then Wilson will make his decision based upon Bowman’s opinion.
