Shootouts Hurt Sharks

from the San Francisco Chronicle,
The big question when the NHL added the shootout to decide tie games this season—guaranteeing a winner in every game—was how it would affect the standings. Would teams earn “cheap” points and would others possibly get aced out because they didn’t take enough advantage of the new rule?
...Only one team has been hurt by the new rule: If you guessed that one team is the Sharks, you are correct.
If shootouts had not come into being, and teams earned one point each for a tie after regulation and five minutes of sudden death, the Sharks would have 84 points, good for eighth place in the West and three points ahead of Edmonton.
