From Jacques Demers in USA Today,
Four numbers stuck with me after watching the Detroit Red Wings take a 3-1 series lead on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night:
•Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, the 38-year-old captain of the Red Wings, played more than 28 minutes, skating 37 shifts, an average ice time of 44 seconds.
•Pavel Datsyuk played 19 minutes, averaging 39 seconds.
•Henrik Zetterberg played close to 23 minutes, averaging 43 seconds.
•Johan Franzen averaged 42 seconds.

Aw, c’mon PRS. If you were making an irreverent joke and I missed it, I apologize, because irreverence is almost always funny. But, as it says just below his name on the story, the guy’s won two Coach of the Year Awards and a Stanley Cup—maybe he has an insight some of us would be interested in. Whether he can write it down himself or not is irrelevant.
I think his take on the shift lengths is interesting. It’s exactly what Babcock was referring to after game 3. The disparity between the Wing’s shifts and Malkin’s parallels the disparity in coaching, IMO.
I’m surprised, though, that he didn’t mention Osgood as one of the possible Conn Smythe candidates. I would think that certainly Ozzie must merit serious consideration…

It was intended as sort of a joke. More along the lines of the fact that many people consider USA Today to not be serious journalism and now they have an illiterate guy writing for them.

It’s kind of funny that out of all the people they could have analyze hockey for USA Today, they pick a guy who’s illiterate as reflected in the byline “By Jacques Demers as told to USA Today”
