Should Bodychecking Be Allowed In Women’s Hockey?

from Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail,
The GM Place crowd of nearly 7,000 roared with approval when Canadian players Gillian Apps and Becky Kellar slammed opponents into the boards in the first period of their game against the United States on Wednesday. But the cheers turned suddenly to jeers after the referee’s whistle, as the Canadians sulked to the penalty box.
The Norwegian referee made the proper call in both instances, yet, to the crowd and to a small but growing number of critics inside the women’s game, the penalties appeared to contravene the spirit of hockey. With the sport struggling to build a fan base, some insiders are beginning to ask whether the time has come for women’s hockey to amend its rules and allow bodychecking.

Bodychecking should absolutely be allowed. Hockey might as well be ringette without the physical aspect. These women are tough, and there is no reason they shouldn’t be able to allowed to indulge in a big part of what makes the sport so exciting.

Yes. Same game, same rulebook. Silly question.

There’s a snide, sexist joke to be made here concerning the use of the words ‘Woman’s’, ‘Checking’, and ‘Body’, but I am far to evolved emotionally to stoop to such a level.

Further, what’s with the full face shields? I can’t tell the players apart. Can’t make the connection. Just another anonymous skater. Clearly, with the games basically being played in front of family in friends, I am not alone.
OK, have to take exception to this line of thinking.
Last time I checked, NCAA Div. I hockey required full face shields for men and women both, and last time I checked there were no lack of willing attendees to men’s games for most of those schools.

Agreed. They aren’t professionals with guaranteed contracts (for now) and hefty insurance policies.
Also, whoever says this needs to pay closer attention to the game. You should be able to tell every player on your own team apart simply by their skating style. Two strides is all it should take.

who cares?
let the players decide.
who gives a flying-F what “fans” and men think about women’s hockey. let them develop their own sport, rules and outcome. dudes on the net thinking they have some interest or stake in women’s hockey are lame.
if you enjoy it, great, but making periphery critiques about face shields is lame as hell

I’m all for face shields. In fact, I’d support a move to face shields in the WNBA while we’re at it.
