Simeon Varlamov Save On Crosby

This save deserves two calls, one from NBC and the other from CBC.
Watch both below…
added 6:22pm, Tarik El-Bashir of Capitals Insiders quotes a few players and both coaches on the save,
Sidney Crosby: “I don’t need to discuss [the big stops]. You don’t want to waste those opportunities. You want to take advantage of it. You end up losing the game, 3-2, and you don’t want to look back and say, ‘What if?’ The fact is, it happens in the game. As a player, you have to forget that quickly.”

that play could set the momentum for rest of the series

That’s living in the heads of the Pens’ shooters.

how pathetic is bob cole “it hit the post”. very upset I didnt realize NBC was showing this game as well.
spectacular save though, to get the angle of the stick right so it deflects outwards, so good.

But it didnt…and the league’s most overrated player missed the equivalent of a lay up…Caps in 5.

it’s only one game. capitals need to improve defensive side. the only way you can contain pens with you force play from the sides and dont give up second chances. Caps will win in 7.
i think home ice means alot this year in this playoffs

The defender coming back on Crosby got just enough of his stick so he couldn’t bury it. Great play there too (if only to make up letting him get behind you).

To his credit, Doc Emrick recognized as it happened the majesty of that save.
I love Doc’s reaction. He is nearly hysterical. Great call on a superb play.
This is why we all love hockey.

In addition, the puck was rolling on the pass too. If you’ve ever played the game, you know that a rolling puck makes it much harder to get a crisp shot off.
Not taking anything away from Varlamov, but to say that Crosby totally blew it isn’t looking at the entire context of the play.
It’s gonna be a hell of a series. And the Caps owe Varlamov a beer after that game.

I swear you would think that Bob Cole watches the games from the parking garage. The guy is terrrrible. Then on the other hand you have Doc’s call that really caputered the moment.

Is he even old enough to drink legally yet?

You can’t blame Crosby for not sinking that one; the puck was rolling and he did alot just to get a good shot on goal. You can’t take anything away from Varlamov for the save, either. He even positions the stick for the save, rather than just blindly throwing the stick in the way and getting lucky. Brilliant save.
Several posts for the Caps, several missed opportunities for the Pens. Still promises to be a good series.

Varly turned 21 this past Monday.

it must pain crosby to give any credit to another player. he couldn’t muster up the balls to say that varly made a great save on him. kind of like he said zetterburg’s dominate one-man show on the 5-on-3 in the stanley cup finals wasn’t anything special. give credit where credit is due.

I’m rooting for the Pens in this series, but wow..
What a save! I’m real happy for the youngster Varlamov, especially since that save came after he let in a softie from Eaton. That’ll do wonders for his confidence!

The Washington Post has a great picture of the save.
