Simon Should Not Have Been On The Ice

from Scott Morrison of CBC Sports,

Where is the common sense?

Simon shouldn’t have been anywhere near the ice against the Rangers for all the obvious reasons. And especially since the Rangers decided to dress Ryan Hollweg, the player Simon chopped down his with his stick back on March 8 to earn the supreme wrath of the league.

Can you say retribution?

But there they were together on the ice Monday night in Long Island and the mayhem was, well, as predictable and it was entirely avoidable. Hollweg and Simon sparred and jabbed with each other.

Thanks canesice.  We also have a video up from an earlier post today at New York Fight Night in case you missed it.

Plus Scotty Bowman was on The Fan590 in Toronto this morning and basically wondered the same thing, why was Simon even allowed to be on the ice for this game?

What was Hollweg doing playing in a pre-season game at the Nassau Coliseum? Simon needs to play as many pre-season games as possible since he is out the first five regular season games. The NHL may want to re-consider this policy, but if I’m the coach I want him in as many game situations as possible before the suspension re-starts.

Hollweg was up to his old tactics again last night with hits from behind and then hiding behind Orr when given the chance. Obvious to everyone, but Crazy Larry at the Post, Strudwick and NOT DiPietro was the third man in. The biggest danger to the health of NHL playes is the lack of respect by so-called “agitators” that hide behind the instigator rule.

They can reconsider the policy all they want.  But until they do, this is hockey folks.  And I guarantee you that not a single Ranger would have complained about Simon being in the Islanders lineup last night.  If you were ever going to send a message to him, last night was the time to do it because you didn’t have two points on the line.  Hollweg is a piece of trash that doesn’t even contribute offensively.  Simon does.  That’s the difference between the two.  Hollweg is a S disturber and nothing more… he’s not even a good fighter.  That is why the Rangers have Colton Orr and Orr did his job going after Simon last night.  He got off four or five good rights before Simon sent him down with one left.  The real question is, is this bad for hockey?  And aside from the fluffball writers that jump at every opportunity to attack fighting in hockey, the fans love it (any and every fan poll validates that statement) and the players want more of it (just search NHL players poll and read the stats yourself).  Hey, God forbid a real rivalry gets started in this league.

Scott Morrison of CBC Sports is being plain silly. Why? Because it is preseason, time for teams to focus on line creation, scheme testing, and setting up for the regular season. Simon, after his suspension, will be part of that.

It’s a shame that those namby pamby sorts get their skirts all tight and mussed when some fists fly. After all, in the bash fest that was the Devil’s/Flyers, was there such an outcry??? No, of course not.

Silly hockey pundits. Won’t they ever learn.

As for Scotty Bowman, this is a man who ran the biggest bruisers on god’s green earth…in every game. Probert and Kocur.

Fact is, a message was sent, and you put out what you need, even if its to be a bashfest to creat unity and to see if they can hack it…and keep to a game plan. As the game wore on, Isles got back their composure, and the NYR’s fell apart. Including Shanny’s dumb double penalty in OT.

Hollweg hides behind the instigator rule?  Do you even watch the games?  He’s a terrible fighter, but everyone knows that because he DOESN’T refuse to fight.  His teammates probably jumped in because they know it too—knew he was overmatched—and so did DP (of Simon) when he tried to pull Strudwick off Simon & Hollweg.
Honestly, I think it was probably good that this happened in a preseason game—less media attention.  I thought Simon would have been smart enough to pretty much stay away from Hollweg (no one’s ever accused Hollweg of being smart, and since he was the victim in the “incident,” he shouldn’t have been the one to change his plans).
This game could have made things worse for the season, or it could have gotten everything out of the way before the season starts.  We’ll probably find out in the preseason rematch on Friday.
