Slowly Forgetting the Jets

From Randy Turner at the Winnipeg Free Press,

It’s difficult to forget how in the immediate aftermath of the Jets’ departure to Phoenix, the sense of mourning—for most hockey fans, at least—was palpable. There were fond and fresh memories of white-outs, now a staple in the land of the Penguins. Then there were long-standing feelings of bitterness and cynicism toward a league that never really wanted Winnipeg in the first place.

Not to mention the subsequent hundreds of millions of dollars frittered away to finance the facade of the NHL someday operating a successful franchise in the Arizona desert.

But now, with the passage of time, there’s a void replaced by… what? Ambivalence? Acceptance? Disinterest?

You obviously aren’t from around here.  There’s debate about getting a team back every year and Gary Bettman and Paul Kelly both said this would be a good time for Winnipeg to have a team back.

I loved the Jets.  So they lost a lot.  I watched them when I was younger because I wanted to see them play Lemieux or Gretzky or Yzerman.  We at least made the playoffs frequently.

Ther is history here, Winnipeg had a hockey team in 1895 and was one of the first to win the Cup (although I don’t think it was called the Stanley Cup at the time).  We deserve better than a minor league team.

Maybe I’m wrong but I remember alot of empty seats back in the day. Losing is not exciting. I don’t care what country you are located. Quebec was better supported.

And while the Jets may have largely been horrific in the NHL, they were the most dominant team of the short-lived WHA, pioneering the hybridization of North American and European hockey, inspiring Glen Sather as he built what would become the dynastic Oilers.
