Small Crowd In Kansas City

from Jim Baumbach of Newsday,

The Islanders came here hoping to be barreled over with support from a city supposedly desperate for its own NHL team. And how did the people of Kansas City react? With one huge, collective yawn.

The support for the preseason game against the Kings was so poor that every upper-deck section was blocked off by huge black curtains. You know, to block the many, many rows of empty seats.

Some threat, eh?

You know what this half-empty arena looked like? Any other Islanders home game.

Maybe the people of Kansas City, discerning sports fans that they are, recognized the NHL sent a couple of B-list teams to this shindig.  Try sending a couple of Original 6 teams next time, guys.  Don’t insult the potential fan base.

sounds as lame as an AHL game
go bettman. put a team in that wicked market that already has an NFL and MLB team. just what they need, more useless, non-competitive crap.

I was at the game.  We had tickets for one of those sections that was blocked off by the black curtains.  What a joke.  We ended up in upper-level seats very close to center ice that gave an incredible view of the ice.  The two teams played like garbage too.

You want a measure of interest, play a regular season game here.

Jim Baumbach is a rodent. The Islanders averaged over 13,000 last year in a season that was as dismal as any the team endured since 1972-73. There were no “embarrassment” crowds of 3,000 like there used to be in Bloomington before the North Stars moved.

In Baumbach’s world, you just make up the truth so you can get off a snarky line and provoke. Baumbach is a Ranger’s-Cablevision tool.  Pathetic.
