So it’s not NJ that always beats the Habs, it’s Brodeur

New Jersey almost always beats Montreal. It’s a pattern going back over a decade. Tonight, the Habs rolled over the Devils, 5-1, after the Devils beat the Habs just weeks ago. The difference? Marty Brodeur two weeks ago, Johan Hedberg/Mike McKenna tonight. A goal ten seconds in, and another just a minute later. Great play by Lars Eller. Extremely strong play by Yannick Weber. All this depsite a press-box seat for the Habs most talented player (arguably) PK Subban.
Oh, and Carey Price? Bang on. Yet again. Almost got a shut-out. The best NHL hockey he’s ever played has been this season.
Also impressive about this one? The Habs lost 4-3 in overtime last night, blowing a 3-1 lead to Edmonton.
So does Subban stay in the press-box next game? How will the scratch affect Subban’s relationship with coach Jacques Martin? Does Weber get another chance to shine?

So do I hear anyone talking about how it is the Devil system that made Brodeur great?

Eller has elevated his game considerably of late. He’s pushing hard to the net and making plays. He was first star last night, and I suspect his playing time will continue to rise. Part of the issue was that he was getting only seven to ten minutes a game. If he gets some solid top line time, I think he will begin to produce consistently. But with Jacques Martin, that’s a big if.
As for Brodeur - I completely agree, and have said to in many a bar argument for years. Brodeur was a huge part of the Devils success, it was never just the system.
