from The Good, The Bad And The Duthie,
Two years ago, (former) Philadelphia Flyer Steve Downie hit (former) Ottawa Senator Dean McAmmond with a viscious headshot as he circled the net. Downie left his feet, led with his elbow, and went for the head. He received, rightfully, a 20-game suspension.
Tuesday night, St. Louis Blues scrapper Cam Janssen hit Phoenix defenseman Zbynek Michalek with an equally vicious headshot in the exact same area. Janssen, a repeat offender, left his feet, led with his elbow, and went for the head. Janssen received a $2500 fine.
There are only two major differences between the two plays.
First, the Downie hit happened in Canada, the victim was a player on a Canadian team, and it was replayed endlessly, becoming a catalyst for the headshot debate. The Janssen hit happened in a Blues-Coyotes game. Nuff said.
read on and in case you missed the video of the hit, watch it here…

I’ve been wondering about this too. There have been a few head-shot incidents this season that have gotten little to no suspension time that clearly should have. If Downie or Jesse Boulerice get 20+ games for their antics, so should anyone else who does the same thing. It’s interesting to note that Boulerice got more games than Downie and Ryan Kesler didn’t suffer any serious injury. And whether someone gets injured or not shouldn’t enter into the equation. You’re trying to modify behavior here and equivocating over how hurt someone gets doesn’t do much to deter these hits.
That said, the realist side of me knows that much isn’t going to change. If Sidney Crosby was the one delivering the hit on Michalek there wouldn’t be a peep about it from the league office.
