from Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post,
The fact Smyth’s brains got scrambled in the second period was reason enough for Colorado teammate Ian Laperriere to seek out Johnson to inflict some vigilante justice.
“I did what I had to do,” said Laperriere, who admitted he was only following the code of hockey. “I told (Johnson) at some point he was going to have to fight someone.”
But although both men put up their dukes later in the game, the fight never erupted, because L.A. veteran Rob Blake stepped in and made peace before the first punch.
And true to the caveman logic that rules the NHL, Blake was promptly given a two-minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The same thing happened to Datsyuk, I think, against the ducks last month when he was trying to break up a fight as well.
“Blessed are the peacemakers?” pfft…

Well, they couldn’t give him a 3rd man in penalty since there was no fight to begin with, even though gloves had been tossed. They had to give him something. Better than tossing him from the game.
The Avs got theirs later, when they were paying too much attention to Johnson and stopped playing hockey long enough for the Kings to score.

I thought that was a strange penalty at the time myself. 2 minutes for stopping a fight? Um, that’s a new one…
