Sopel May Attend Wings Camp

from Red Wings Corner,

General manager Ken Holland said Friday that there will be a couple of veteran defensemen coming to the Red Wings’ main training in Traverse City next week. Holland said that he has tentative agreements, but declined to name with whom until the players’ involvement is secured.
One source in the organization said that Brent Sopel is one of the blue-liners who will come to camp as a free agent. Sopel is 30 years old and split time last season between Los Angeles and Vancouver. The unrestricted free agent has spent parts of nine seasons in the NHL, scoring 10 goals (six on the power play) in 2003-04 for the Canucks.

If the Wings are willing to risk sending Derek Meech down, Sopel could be an excellent addition to the blueline.  He’s very mobile for a big man, he’s got a slick outlet pass, and while he does have Schneider-style adventures in being out of position on occasion, he’s got a solid mean streak, and he’s got a HUGE shot on the power play.

I had both Sutton and Sopel on my D-man Wish List early in the summer. Any idea why he hasn’t been signed?

As a former Canuck, it seems strange that Vancouver brought him back last spring (at the cost of a 2nd & 4th round pick) and then let him walk away this summer. Is he pulling a “Markov” and asking for more than the market will bear? Or is it something else?

If the Wings end up signing Sopel, another option besides risking losing Meech via waivers en route to GR might be to package some defensive depth (one or two of Lilja, Meech, Quincey) and offensive potential (Hudler and/or Samuelsson)to acquire a second line forward.

Yes, he’s coming and he is in excellent shape. Watched him skate this summer with Conroy. Booming one timer from the blue line. Would be a great pick up.
