Sounds Familiar

from Japers’ Rink,

To recap - these were not her questions and there’s no disclosure anywhere that the Q&A was a conference call via the NHL. This is no different than if a political reporter published portions of a Presidential press conference under her byline with the headline “A quick chat with George W. Bush.”

And the PHWA is worried about bloggers lowering journalistic standards?

read on to see what the issue is…

It could be construed as misleading, but it is not a lie. Nowhere was it implied that there was nobody else involved in this chat, or that the questions were all hers. It is difficult to argue that she did not chat with Alex, or that the fact that others were present and also chatting with Alex discounts her from using the word ‘chat’. Then the point must also be made that “A conference call with Alex” will never fly as a headline, no editor will let that through.

It’s not at all unusual for post-game TV and radio reports to have the reporter saying something like “I spoke to XXX after the game about his GWG (or walk-off home run)” when the footage clearly shows a media scrum and the player responding to someone other than the reporter.

I tend to agree af, but the headline, ‘A quick chat with Alexander Ovechkin’, sure can throw readers off a bit.

Clarifying what had actually happened would have left no questions in the mind of readers.  If I were just a general fan, I would have gotten the impression she did the interview herself.
