from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,
A 24-year-old who will make $5 million from the Senators this season, Spezza says he has chatted with Heatley this summer and that both of them—while realizing the financial windfalls that await—are more concerned with consistently performing at a high level for a number of years.
Spezza also says he has not dwelled on the offer sheets presented Vanek and Penner, or the chance he could be getting one at some point during the dog days of 2008.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

Spezza’s got great potential (34-53--87 in 67 games), but he may yet fall short. He has yet to play a full season (67, 68, 78 and 33 games, going back the past four years), and that could hurt him and the team. He really needs to start adapting to the new NHL. I rarely see him land a hit, more often lining them up perfectly, but veering off, like a golfer practicing his swing beside his ball. He’s also not very responsible defensively yet (whereas Heatley has really stepped up in that department, even scoring shorthanded tallies), and is easily battered. Still, I wouldn’t want to give up his 87 points. But I’d rather take them as 1.3 points per game, extend it over a full 82, and see him with 106 points, and a lot more respect.
