From Allen Panzeri at CanWest News,
To get Sherwood-Drolet to keep making his sticks in Canada, Spezza had to play his trump card as a longtime, valuable customer. He has been using the company’s sticks since his final years in junior hockey, and he’s also featured on the company’s home page.
“I made it clear with them that, if I was going to continue using their sticks, I wanted to make sure they were still made in the same place they’ve been made for the last seven, eight years,” Spezza said on Monday.
Spezza goes through 300+ sticks a season. As mentioned recently, Sherwood will be discontinuing its production of wooden sticks in Quebec, and having them made in China and Estonia starting in January.

It’s going to be hard to keep them from eventually being outsourced. Goaltending equipment is at the point where BauerNike and Reebok make some pro stuff only overseas, while TPS is going to a point where they’re going to have all of their non-customized equipment made overseas...and that’s the general trend.
If hockey players want to keep Canadian equipment-makers working, they have to pay the same attention to detail that people who want to buy American and Canadian-made cars do to make sure that they’re not buying a re-branded Mazda...and they’ll need to make some hard choices, because there are some pieces of equipment that just aren’t made in Canada anymore.

awesome move by Jason.
hockey manufacturing is becoming an absolute joke. they want stuff made in China and then waste loads of petrol (thats sky high and will be in decline soon enough, again, making it more expensive) to get the garbage/breakable sticks back to North America. what a laugh. “cheap labor”
go back to wood, people.
