From Francis X. Donnelly at the Detroit News,
The Red Wings lead the Stanley Cup finals two games to one and the Pistons made the NBA Eastern Conference Finals for the sixth straight year before bowing out Friday night in Game 6.
Success has buoyed the spirits of the staggered populace, providing a respite from the bleak economic landscape, residents and psychologists said.
“We need it,” said Pat Searles, a Warren personal trainer who was laid off by a health club six months ago. “We need something to feel good about.”
On the other hand, as CBC points out, just don’t bet on the game! Sports is an emotional roller coaster, and the playoffs can be brutal.
*An old report on NPR stressed that sports fan stress can be a heart hazard.

I will tell you, I agree. I was not a fan of the NBC/Versus broadcasts until this year. I was beside myself that they would never do replays and that the broadcasters would never criticize the refs. That pissed me off.
Now they do replays all the time, they have basic but thorough analysis from Mike Milbury in the intermissions (which is what you need in a national broadcast), they have great camera angles and production. I thing they have turned the broadcasts around in a major way...they are just as good as the ABC broadcasts before the lock-out.
As someone who has several years of experience broadcasting minor league hockey for radio, I feel I can say that Doc Emerick sucks as a broadcaster. Dave Strader is much better, and the guy they had doing color with Strader was much better than Ed Olczyk. But other than that, I have no complaints!
