Stanley Cup Hangover

From Rocky Bonanno at NHL.com

In a summer filled sure to be filled with partying and back-slapping, members of the Detroit Red Wings must be careful not to come down with a mythical illness known around hockey circles as “Stanley Cup Hangover.”

I’ve subscribed to this theory for quite some time, and keep it in mind whenever preparing for another fantasy draft. Quite simply, it is the belief that teams that advance to the Cup Final, whether win or lose, are more susceptible to disappointing performances the following season, and especially vulnerable are veterans on the wrong side of 30.

continued... as he puts his theory to the test looking at past finalists

Seems to have been supported nicely by facts.

yeah, if you take a few of the players.

there’s no mention there of players whose production increased or stayed the same and no context behind any of the stats given apart from the figures.

From the story

“But not all was lost in Anaheim. Youngsters Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, the sixth and eighth leading scorers in 2006-07, became the go-to-guys the next year, placing 1-2 with 82 and 54 points, respectively. Getzlaf improved by 24 points, and Perry went up 10. Both turned 27 during the Ducks’ Cup run in 2007.

Coming off a Stanley Cup loss to Anaheim, the Senators rebounded fairly well in 2007-08. Big guns Jason Spezza (87 points to 92) and Daniel Alfredsson (87 to 89) held the status quo while playing in a few more games than in 2006-07.

I don’t have the time or inclination to check all of his “facts”, but this is most definitely wrong.

(nice, the magic word for this post is ‘pos27sible’)

DET fans will gladly take the risk of “hangover” for next year, thanks…

In Detroit, the cure for any potential “Stanley Cup Hangover” is spelled B-a-b-c-o-c-k. And beyond that, the hardest workers on the team are the over-30 bunch (led by Lids and Cheli). I don’t see any let-up or let-down coming from anyone on this team.

True.  A non-repeat will be for the same reasons any loss occurs - injuries, bad luck, being out-played by a hungrier team, not being the better team in a given series, etc.

I don’t see it as a complacency factor.  At least with the Red Wings they are used to having a bullseye every single night, so that won’t be any different.  smile

Yes, poor Nicklas Lidstrom, such a let-down from season to season.  Between Lidstrom and Babcock, the only person who’ll still have a hangover in September, if the Cheli’s Chili incident was an example, anyway, is Brett Lebda…
