The Dallas Stars defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 to force a game 5 back in Detroit on Saturday.
Detroit fans won’t be happy with the Datsyuk goal that was wavied off due to the Holmstrom goalie interference, Dallas fans will be saying it’s about time.
Game 5 will be one of matchups, can Dallas coach Dave Tippett get his checking line out against the Datsyuk line?
Wings will want to end the series in five, Dallas will come out with the same approach, win one more game.
The JLA should be rocking Saturday afternoon around 1:30pm ET.
added 11:05pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
The word of the day, for the Dallas Stars, was: believe.
It was plastered on everything, from the crop tops worn by their roller-blading ice girls, to the Budweiser banners that skirted the perimeter of the pregame street party outside the American Airlines Center. And if it seemed odd that Believe! T-shirts were already going for half-price at the concession stands early in the game, well, that wasn’t really Mike Modano’s concern.
Modano, the former captain of the Stars, ensured his team would live to play another day. In a game when the Detroit Red Wings had a second-period goal controversially disallowed because of a goaltender interference call, Modano’s third-period power-play goal broke a 1-1 tie and led the Stars to a 3-1 victory over Detroit last night, which permitted them to stave off elimination for one night anyway.

I hope the Stars enjoyed their Game 4 gift from the officials. You’re going to get your afts handed to you at the Joe for Game 5 now that you’ve made the Wings mad.
Little Gary was even in attendance to make sure of the outcome I see. It wasn’t just the disallowed goal, it was also the 3rd period where Dallas was allowed to hook and obstruct wherever they wanted (until it was too late, when the officials finally began calling them).

George, certainly it was the Stars’ best game, but a lot of that had to do with them playing with a lead instead of playing from behind. Detroit owned the second period until the last 30 seconds.
It’s obviously not fair to say that the correct call on that play would have changed who won the game, but it would’ve certainly put Detroit in a position of power that they never had in the game as a result of the poor officiating.
I honestly don’t think the complaining about the other calls/non-calls isn’t a big deal. Yeah, Dallas definitely came out pre-lockout style for this game. But Detroit was pretty bad in the first period, and both teams got their chances. It all comes down to one call, unfortunately, and that call was absolutely huge.
For the record, there’s nothing in the rulebook that says a player can’t be in the crease. For crying out loud. I’m tired of this discussion. The criteria is whether or not the goalie is prevented from moving freely within the crease to make a save. It also has nothing to do with being able to SEE freely, otherwise the NHL would be REAL boring.

Which is exactly why Homer’s goal in Game 1 was not interference either...no matter how much Turckey, Tippy, et al whined about it.
And also why Dallas’ first goal last night was allowed. (Although I thought the rule was you could follow the puck into the crease, not wait there for it; guess I better go read the rule to find out for sure.)
BTW, I have to admire the Stars’ great new slogan...how the heck did they ever come up with that? It did seem kind of familiar though; almost like I’d seen it somewhere else before—maybe even by another hockey team...hmmmmm...Believe…
If (please God no!) it goes back to Dallas for Game 6, I won’t be surprised to see an ersatz HOCKEYTOWN logo at center ice.

I don’t think that the call is the reason that the Red Wings lost the game, but given that it was a reputation call which affected what would have been a very different tone that would be a 1-0 game, it’s extremely frustrating.
