Stars Of The Month

NEW YORK (Nov. 3, 2008)—Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Semin, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for October.

FIRST STAR—ALEXANDER SEMIN, LW, WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Semin led all NHL scorers with 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) and posted a +7 rating in nine games as the Capitals went 5-3-1 in October. He recorded points in eight of nine games and goals in six contests. Semin recorded six multiple-point games—one shy of his total for all of 2007-08—and matched the most points by a Capitals player through nine games (Dale Hunter had 1-15—16 in 1991-92).

Semin began the season with multiple points in four of his first five games, including three points (one goal, two assists) on opening night in a 7-4 loss at Atlanta Oct. 10. He tallied a pair of goals in a 5-1 victory over Vancouver Oct. 13, notched 1-1—2 in a 4-3 win at Pittsburgh Oct. 16 and had two goals in a 4-3 shootout loss to New Jersey Oct. 18.

SECOND STAR—HENRIK LUNDQVIST, G, NEW YORK RANGERS

Lundqvist led all NHL goaltenders in victories and backstopped the Rangers to the top of the Eastern Conference by posting an 8-2-1 record with a 1.99 goals-against average and .928 save percentage. Lundqvist started 11 of the Rangers’ 13 games in October and allowed two goals or fewer nine times, including a pair of 2-1 victories over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the NHL Premiere series in Prague, Czech Republic Oct. 4-5. He made 30 saves in a 4-2 victory over Chicago in the Rangers’ North American opener Oct. 10, posted a season-high 40 saves in a 5-4 loss at Detroit Oct. 18 and stopped 27 shots and all three shootout attempts in a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh Oct. 25.

THIRD STAR—SHEA WEBER, D, NASHVILLE PREDATORS

Weber led all NHL defensemen in scoring with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and posted a +5 rating in 10 games, helping the Predators to a 5-4-1 record. He set career individual game highs with three assists, four points and a +5 rating in a 6-3 victory over Columbus Oct. 18 and tallied the game-winning goal, an assist and a +2 rating in a 3-1 victory over Edmonton Oct. 30. Weber also has earned a dramatic increase in ice time, going from a career-high 19:30 per-game average last season to 24:24 in 2008-09, including a season-high 28:46 in a 3-1 victory over Dallas Oct. 11.
