NEW YORK (Dec. 1, 2008)—Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller and St. Louis Blues goaltender Chris Mason have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending Sunday, Nov. 30.
FIRST STAR—SIDNEY CROSBY, C, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Crosby led all NHL scorers for the week by tallying nine points (six goals, three assists) in three games as the Penguins (14-6-3, 31 points) went 2-1-0 and remained fourth in the Eastern Conference. Crosby tallied multiple points in all three games, beginning with a goal and two assists in a 5-3 victory over the New York Islanders Nov. 26. SECOND STAR—JONAS HILLER, G, ANAHEIM DUCKS
Hiller posted a 2-0-0 record with a 0.50 goals-against average, .984 save percentage and one shutout as the Ducks (14-8-3, 31 points) won three consecutive games and improved to fourth place in the Western Conference. Hiller made 26 saves in posting his second career shutout as the Ducks defeated Chicago 1-0 Nov. 28 and turned aside 36 of 37 shots in a 4-1 victory at Carolina Nov. 30, tying a Ducks’ team record by earning standings points in eight consecutive road games. Hiller improved to 6-1-1 with a 1.94 goals-against average, .936 save percentage and two shutouts in 10 appearances this season.
THIRD STAR—CHRIS MASON, G, ST. LOUIS BLUES
Mason won both starts for the week, stopping 75 of 77 shots for a .974 save percentage as the Blues (10-10-2, 22 points) closed within two points of the final Western Conference playoff spot. Making his first start against his former club, Mason stopped a season-high 47 shots and two shootout attempts in a 1-0 victory over the Nashville Predators Nov. 25.
