Stars Of The Week

NEW YORK (March 16, 2009)—New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur, Calgary Flames center Olli Jokinen and Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending Mar. 15.

FIRST STAR—MARTIN BRODEUR, G, NEW JERSEY DEVILS

Brodeur tied Patrick Roy as the NHL’s all-time victories leader and helped the Devils continue their charge up the Eastern Conference standings, posting a 3-0-0 record with a 1.67 goals-against average and .943 save percentage. Brodeur began the week by making 35 saves in a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames Mar. 10, stopped 26 shots in a 5-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes Mar. 12 and turned aside 22 shots in a 3-1 decision over the Montreal Canadiens Mar. 14 for his 551st career victory, matching Roy’s record total. A winner in seven of eight starts since returning from a torn bicep tendon that required surgery, Brodeur has backstopped the Devils (45-20-3) to within six points of the first-place Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference standings. Brodeur’s first chance to pass Roy is Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks at Prudential Center.

Jokinen has tallied 10 points (eight goals, two assists) in six games with his new club.

THIRD STAR—SIDNEY CROSBY, C, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
